Okay, so maybe to some of you this might sound like blasphemy but I totally hate deviled eggs. The regular kind. With the pickles. And the mustard. Those are two things that I can't stand, but last year for Easters I was put in charge of bringing the deviled eggs to dinner with Jacob's family. I decided that I would make the traditional ones, because that's what everyone likes, but I also wanted to find a recipe that I could enjoy as well. Here it is kids. My favorite food- avocado, in deviled eggs! Make a lot- because they are so good everyone will be wanting seconds and thirds.

A Fifteen Minute Wreath
If there is one trait I wish I had more than any other it is endless patience. But alas, I don't even have momentary patience very often. That is why this is the perfect craft for me. So easy, so quick, so cheap. I sound like a broken record over here.
It came about because I had a friend from out of town who was going to drop by and I have nothing on my front door. Luke just happened to be napping which is not his strongest suit, so I decided to take advantage and whip something up.
First grab your wreath form, the one I actually used was from the dollar store, but I also like these cheap alternatives here

Conference Crepes
It's almost time for General Conference, and I am so excited to share with you one of my favorite traditions: Conference Crepes. Pretty self- explanatory. The thing I love about Crepes is that you are the creator of your own destiny when it comes to fillings. My dad used to make me and my brother crepes growing up, most often when strawberry and peach seasons came around. I am still convinced that strawberries or peaches and some powdered sugar rolled up in a crepe is the most divine thing a person will ever taste.

Let's Talk Credit Cards
There
are few things in the world of budgets and good habits that can spark a
debate like the credit card. Many conservative financial minds
pronounce doom on anyone who would use them, and while I certainly agree
with a lot of their reasons, I have a
hard time with the broad generalization that nothing good can come from
credit card use. For a financially disciplined person with good habits,
a good credit card can provide you many rewards, along with some degree
of protection and peace of mind.
Now before I go any further, it’s important to explain my view of a
credit card. I view my card exactly as I would view a debit or a
charge card. There is NO discussion of interest rates or penalties of
any kind because I would never pay interest or
penalties. I pay my bill in full every month. It’s not a choice; I’ve
thrown out of my mind any notion of being able to spend money that I
don’t have. Instead of carrying around envelopes of cash (which I
totally endorse, this is simply another way) I carry
around a small credit card which has no theft or fraud risk, I spend
money within the budget, I track and write down my purchases, and I know
where I stand. For me, it’s no different than cash, and I have never
once felt like I spend more money because I have
a credit card. You can cite studies or experts all day long who say I
spend more with a credit card, but again, that’s a broad generalization
and I just don’t feel like it’s true for me and my situation (but I’ve
been called crazy before). I’m also not justifying
credit card use for anyone who doesn’t feel like it would work for
them. You know you. Nobody else does. If you even have the slightest
doubt in your ability to control your spending, don’t do it.
As a side note to this point, something that really helps me is
using a money management program to track your finances (we use
Quicken). You have the ability to group your different accounts
(checking/savings/credit cards/investments) how you would like
to see them to get a broader picture of your financial situation. I
group our checking accounts and our credit card account (all short term
liquid money) in one group, so the total amount of money it shows is
always subtracting all of our expenses, credit
card or otherwise. That way we never get confused about how much money
we actually have. I RARELY log onto the bank or credit card websites
and look at my accounts individually; I use Quicken so I’m always
getting the holistic look at our financial picture.
Returning to the point, if you decide a credit card may be for you,
there are some great benefits. Most credit cards come with very good
fraud and loss protection services so you don’t have to worry about
unauthorized charges, etc. Many have additional
concierge, warranty and return protection types of services. I like the
idea that if I lose my card I can make one phone call and the problem
is solved, rather than worrying about a bunch of cash I may have just
lost. And lastly, the only real reason I would
ever get a credit card is because of the rewards programs. There are
many to choose from, and as long as you are paying your bill on time, in
full, and keeping to your financial plan and budget, these rewards
programs really can be a very good deal.
I am a large proponent of American Express if you are going to have
a credit card. They are a great company that is known for great
customer service, being very easy to work with, and having some of the
best rewards programs available. I think of these
rewards programs as just that, a reward. I am a fan of the travel
rewards programs because it kind of forces me to do something I wouldn’t
otherwise. Cash back can be great too, but I know that I will just
spend it on groceries and maybe go out to dinner
and it will be gone. Having hotel points encourages me to use a hotel,
which is good for the body and soul. I have outlined some of American
Express’ popular options below. I have done my best to make sure this
information is accurate, but I do not guarantee
it, and I am not affiliated in any way with American Express or any
company that these cards represent. (It was in spreadsheet form, but it wouldn't upload. Sorry it's a little harder to compare with them like this. Sigh.)
**Assume that you want to go to Disneyland for 5 nights in October and you have accrued 40,000 points. (Prices obtained March 2, 2012.)
Delta SkyMiles:

Actual Cost: $500
Value of 40,000: $750
Starwoods Hotel:
Annual Fee: $65
Reward Accrual: 1 point per dollar spent
Points/Miles Cost: 10,000 per Night plus 5th night free
Actual Cost: $230
Value of 40,000: $1,150
Costco AMEX:
Annual Fee: None with your paid Costco membership
Reward Accrual: 3% cash back on gas; 2% on travel and restaurants; 1% on everything else
Assume 1.25% cashback on 60,000
Value of 40,000: $750
As you may be able to tell, we have the Starwoods card, and we love it. It is a great value and like I mentioned, it encourages us to take vacations and enjoy life a bit. I understand that 40,000 points can take awhile to accrue, but I look at it as rewards I would have not otherwise had. Even if I can only reap a benefit every couple of years, I didn’t do much for it. The only thing you pay is the annual fee and as you can see, it more than pays for itself in the end.
Style for a Song: Nude Wedges
I totally fell in love with these J.Crew Martina Patent Wedges recently, but the price tag ($228) was out of the question. I began the search for a cheaper option and I think I have found one that I can feel good about. The bottom pair is from Payless and goes for $26.99. What do you think? Love it or hate it?

Ten Dollar Dates: Park & Airshow
So my husband works at an airline and he loves airplanes. We are talking kid at a candy store loves airplanes. He can identify any plane in the sky and knows all about them and thinks he wants to learn to fly them (i'm not so stoked about this idea). So the other weekend there was an airshow in town. Of course Bryce would have died to go, but the cheapest ticket was $50.00. But!!!! There is a great park in our area that has an awesome, clear view of the skies above the airport.
We looked forward to it for a week. On the big day we packed up our blankets and some toys for Luke and then we swung by the drive thru (McDonalds, since it was a Bryce day :) and went for a picnic at the park. We ate and talked and laughed and played and read books and watched the air show at the park.
It was one of those blissful, idyllic days that you wish was ordinary life but only occur occasionally in reality (which make them more special, I think).
Here are some pictures of our little adventure.

Stimulus Tuesdays at Carmike Cinemas
Okay so I have already made it clear that I LOVE the movies, but what if you don't have the money to pay full price for a movie (who does?) but you absolutely cannot wait til it comes to the dollar theater, because you will burst if you don't see it soon. That is what I felt about the Hunger Games. Fortunately, there is an option a lot more affordable than the regular $9 a ticket and $9 popcorn and $4
soft drinks! I could rant and rave all day about how much they charge
for concessions at movie theaters. But I won't. Anyway,
Carmike Cinemas has a promotion called "Stimulus Tuesdays" where they offer $5 tickets no matter what time it is, and $1.50 popcorn and $1.50 soft drinks.
Call your local Carmike to make sure they participate in the promotion, and Happy Tuesday!

Jinxed
I have been wanting a freezer for years. We saved up the money for it awhile ago, but it was still hard to pull the trigger because....well, because it was still a lot of money to spend on something we didn't really need. I tried browsing craigslist etc. but I don't exactly live in a metropolitan area and even after months of searching I never found what I was after.
One day when looking on Sears.com we found a great deal on a frost-free, upright freezer, which is just what we were looking for. Still though, I couldn't pull the trigger. Not gonna lie though I thought about it all the time. I talked about it subconsciously all the time. I just really wanted it. Then, last Friday I heard a radio add for a one day only sale at Sears. My mind went immediately to my precious freezer. I told my husband about it. We got online and looked and our freezer was an extra $150 off.
We waited all day, going back and forth on whether or not to buy it. Finally, we are laying in bed and I say something like, "it is a good time for it. It's a great deal. We have the money. We have been budgeting so well. We have no upcoming big expenses. Unless one of us gets in a car accident or breaks an arm, we should be totally fine." So we buy our freezer.

Go Out To Eat & Still Save!
So, if you have been following us, you know that we know the importance of going out on dates or just going out in general and doing fun things. Being frugal does not mean staying cooped up in your house until you have a certain amount in savings. My husband and I had a hard time affording eating out at or going to do almost anything when we were first married and didn't have our budget figured out. It seemed like even the gas to drive to a restaurant was too expensive. (It is.) We decided though, that considering that eating out is my favorite thing to do, we would do it once a week, and still try to keep the spending to a minimum. We found some really great ways to be able to do this!

Our Budget
So, ever since this blog has started I've gotten tons of inquiries into my personal budget. I feel like I am pretty comfortable talking about finances by now, and I have no problem discussing my own financial decisions. The trouble is, I doubt my budget numbers will help you much. Even if you have the exact same number of people in your family, who are the same ages, who eat the same amount, and have the same medical and dietary needs as my family does, the likelihood that you also have the same income, the same monthly bills, the same dreams and saving aspirations...in any case the probability that your budget will be or should be the same as ours is very small.
However, I can understand the reasons between wanting to know what another person's budget is, if only to get ideas when you are a beginning budgeter. So, I am going to post our monthly budget below. I had my husband whip up a little spreadsheet that had our budget on it, and then he converted each of our budget categories into a percentage of our monthly income. I feel like this will be a lot more helpful to you when trying to write your own budgets. Then, he sorted it from the highest percentages to the lowest so we could see what we spent the most money on. It actually was a really enlightening experience for us, so thank you for asking about our budget! Haha.

DIY: Polka Dot and Glitter Easter Eggs
Okay, So i know that Easter is still a couple of weeks away, but I could not resist coloring some Easter eggs last week while I was on Spring Break. Blame it on spring fever? So last year I wanted to try making glitter eggs so badly but I thought it would be complicated so I didn't do it. This time around I had to, and considering I am loving everything polka-dots this season I wanted to try that too. Guess what? It was SO easy!

Budget Series: Step 2- Make Your Basic Budget Workup
I have to admit that I feel really inadequate writing a series on budgeting. I haven't had any formal training on budgeting and I am by no means an expert. My financial knowledge is derived mainly from what my parents taught me, in correlation with a few college classes and lots of books. Also, my super smart husband majored in finance and I have learned a lot through our journey together so far.
That being said, most of what I have to say on the subject of budgeting is simply my ideas and opinions. I wouldn't even think to write those, were it not for the fact the ideas and opinions of others have helped me so much on my own financial journey. I feel like even though all of our circumstances, and therefore our budgets, are different, the principles are the same.
Live simply. Make smart choices. Save first. No debt.

Sunflower Market Shopping Trip! It's Strawberry season!
So, last week was my Spring Break, I had five whole days off of school! I told myself I was going to get SO much stuff done, and I made a checklist to make sure I remembered to do everything I wanted to. Well, it's Monday and I am wondering where those five days went. I still worked, so I didn't actually have the week completely off but it still flew by too fast and I don't feel like I was nearly productive enough. Is it just me, or does that happen to you guys too? Anyway, after work today I decided to stop by Sunflower Market because I wanted to get some lettuce and spinach, and their produce is the best. Turns out they are having a sale on Strawberries! I love this time of year! They are about 1.25/lb. I got five pounds because they just looked and smelled phenomenal. I also picked up a bunch of other produce, and some oats and eggs.
I paid $15.17 for ALL of this:
5 lbs. strawberries
6 bananas
2 plantains
2 avocados
Romaine lettuce
Fresh spinach
1 lb. quick oats
Dozen eggs
This leaves me about five more dollars for groceries this week which is just enough for some frozen chicken (a staple in this home.) I am so excited for how good we'll be eating this week! Here is my tentative meal plan:
Monday: Strawberry crepes, perhaps? I have to partake of this delicious fruit ASAP.
Tuesday: I was already planning on trying the biscuit recipe Jessica shared a few days ago, and making some home-made white gravy to go with it. Any other suggestions to go along?
Wednesday: Plantains, guacamole & fajitas.
Thursday: Pizza night
Friday: Date night
Saturday: BBQ Chicken Salad
Some of my tentative plans also include freezing some strawberries and bananas for later use in smoothies and other concoctions.

Simply Yummy Biscuits
I love a recipe that is made from "food storage" ingredients and is still yummy. This recipe is great because you can whip them up in minutes, almost as an afterthought. In the last week of the month when things are tight (at least for us) meals are simple, of necessity, and sometimes it's just hard to get fired up about dinner. That is precisely when these biscuits come in handy. I will paint two pictures for you at this juncture. Dinner A) Half a can of beef stew. Dinner B) A bowl of beef stew, served with warm, flaky biscuits and a small side salad. Which would you choose? I love how a few small, and still cheap, additions can turn a necessity meal into a nice meal.

(expired) Walgreens: Two free 8x10 Photo Prints!
I have learned recently that you should hardly ever pay for photo prints. There are stores that are offering free prints all the time! Right now, you can get two 8x10 photo prints at Walgreens for free when you use coupon codes FREEONE and 1PRINT at checkout. Choose in-store checkout. You can only use one coupon code per transaction so they will need to be done separately.
This is a great way to get a nice copy of a free downloadable print, such as the ones I shared here and here.

Party On! (Without breaking the bank.)
image via
So, I love to throw parties. I always want to make a big hoopla about everyone's birthday and make a cake and decorate the place like it's my job. However, too many times I have decided to throw a party only to end up spending way too much money and not even really end up with a result that I am proud of. This was usually because I did not adequately plan ahead. So here is what I have learned along my party-throwing journey through life; hopefully they help you to save time and money as well as help you throw a phenomenal shin-dig.

Budget Series: Step 1 - Making a financial plan that's right for you.
If you want the above printable click here to download. (My husband informed me that it was super girly. That is because I am a girl and I made the printable for my homemaking binder. However, if there is demand for a more manly one I am happy to oblige.)
Before making a budget, it is helpful to draw up a financial plan. Your plan can be as simple or as complicated as you would like. Having a financial plan allows you to determine what you want out of life. It helps you to set and prioritize more detailed goals.
A financial plan is not set in stone. It will adjust as your circumstances in life vary. When we first got married our undefined financial plan looked something like this:
-Graduate from college debt free
-Find jobs
-Build a savings
-Buy a home and start a family (not necessarily in that order)

Printable Roundup: Easter!
Anyone else feeling like getting festive for Easter? I know we haven't quite passed St. P's day but... I sure am! It is such a fun holiday! Just a few of the reasons I love it:
1. It is a chance to reflect on the atonement and resurrection of our Savior.
2. It usually coincides with spring arriving, and hello! Who else loves this weather we're having in Utah? So nice.
3. It brings about Cadbury Mini Eggs and my favorite Deviled Eggs. (I'll be sharing the recipe next week!)
So, in order to help you get the party started, I rounded up a few printable decorations for you to enjoy.
1. Amazing Grace Print created by Shannon at Madigan Made. (I'm in LOVE with this one. Pretty sure it is going to be in my home for a long time past Easter!)

Tie and Suspenders Wedding Onesie
So I mentioned in this post that my baby sister Paige was getting married. Well the wedding was last Thursday and it was totally beautiful. In the weeks and months leading up to the wedding I kept trying to find an outfit for my son with no luck. Her colors for the groomsmen were champagne/gold and there is nothing like that in 8 month old sizes.

$15 in free music and a $5 Amazon gift card!
I am a music lover. Growing up, I spent my allowance every month on a new CD. I would open up the booklet, pop my new album into my mom's car's CD player, and sing at the top of my lungs along with Celine, Mariah, or whoever. I still love getting new music, but I don't have a monthly music allowance anymore, so buying new music is even more of a treat than it used to be. Today I am going to tell you how you can get $15 in free music and simultaneously earn yourself a $5 gift card to Amazon.com. This can be done through SwagBucks. So, if you haven't signed up for- or even heard of SwagBucks, yet, here is my post about it! Once you are signed up, you can follow these steps to get your music and gift card:
1. On the SwagBucks home page there is a tab that says "Earn" in the top left corner
2. Under the Earn tab, click Special Offers
3. On the Special Offers page find the tab called Peanut Labs. The second offer from the top should be for a free 7-day trial at emusic.com, for which you can earn 408 SwagBucks. Click on the offer and follow the appropriate steps to sign up for your free trial. You will be offered ten dollars in free credit for signing up! A credit card or paypal account will be required but you will not be charged as long as you cancel your trial before your seven days is up. (I have already done this, and had no problems.)
4. Browse their huge selection of music and make your selections, downloading is easy and the files should go straight into your default music folder (iTunes, etc.) Once you have used up most of your credit, go to your account and cancel it. When you confirm that you want to cancel, they will offer you five more dollars of credit if you will give them another chance. Accept. Download whatever other music you would like until you don't have enough of their free credit left to get anything else. Then go back and cancel for real.
Now that you have your new music, head back over to SwagBucks and look at your total. Motivation Station: Price vs. Value
Why is it so easy to lose sight of the things in this life that have real value? Value as defined on dictionary.com is things of "relative worth, merit or importance." After I read this quote I found myself pondering how much time I spend worrying about material things and neglecting the things of real import in my life.
Next time I am feeling like I just need to go out or just wanting to spend money for the sake of buying something, I want to instead try to think of ways that I can strengthen my relationship with God or show my husband how much I love him. Rather than mooning over material things I want to be a person who works to protect the things of real value in my life.

Weekly Menu: March 11-17
One of the best things for a budget is planning ahead. When you have a menu plan you spend less at the grocery store and you are way less likely to go out mid week because you don't have time or energy to make something. At least for me, picking meals is the hardest part of the whole dinner process by far.
Another thing that I have had to come to terms with since we started budgeting is that every dinner does not have to be a 5 star meal. Sandwiches count. While no one may pick them as their favorite, if you make them, everyone will get full and happy. It has really helped take the stress off of meal planning, for me to just simplify a little.
Here is my menu for this week:

Jenna at q.a. design is generously offering her state prints for free download! I love these and had been hoping to get one from her etsy shop when I felt I could splurge on art, but now I don't have to wait! Aren't they pretty? She has all 50 states and 15 countries to choose from. You can find them at her blog, here.
I think one of these in a nice simple frame would make a great gift.

Grocery shopping this week.
As I have previously hinted at, I am very open about my budget and especially when it comes to groceries. My husband and I have set a grocery budget of $20 per week. This is very small, and it takes strategy, but it works for us! Obviously, we do not only eat what we get with our grocery budget. We have budgeted for going out on a date once a week, and we are generously fed once or twice weekly by our parents as well. When it comes to our own grocery shopping, we rely heavily on stocking up when things are a good deal, so we only have to buy certain items every few months. As you can see I stocked up on cheese when it was on sale this week, and since it is one of a few must-have's in our home I was pretty excited. So, here is what I got.
Macey's:
4 lbs. Medium Cheddar Cheese: $7.98, on sale and using $1/2 lbs Cheese coupon (sale price no longer available)
1 Cadbury Mini Eggs: $2.99 not on sale, no coupon, I just wanted them so badly!
Target:
2 ReNu Contact Solutions: Free + .86 cent overage, they were priced at $1.57 and I used two $2/1 Target coupon
1 All Laundry Detergent: $3.99, after $1/1 Red Plum coupon
1 SaraLee Whole Wheat Bread: $2.99
1 Fresh Express Romaine Lettuce: $2.50

Budget is not a four letter word.
People seem to hate the word "budget." Every time I mention that we are on one, the response I get usually goes something like "Ooh, that's no fun." I even had a friend who used this word as an insult. When he didn't like something he would say it was "so budget." I thought it was funny, and still do. It sounds like something Tom Haverford would say. However, Being on a budget is not a disadvantage. It does not mean that you have less than others. It is what's smart. It is estimating your income, and your expenditures for a certain period of time, so that you don't end up in the red at the end of said time period.

White Chocolate Chip Blondies from Heaven
The recipe I am about to share with you is perfect for a few reasons that I will list here:
You most likely have the ingredients on hand. Right now.
They are SO easy, and only take only 30 minutes to whip up.
They seem fancy, so when you bring them to a party people will be impressed.
They taste divine.
I am telling you, proceed with caution. You will not be able to stop eating these until the entire pan is gone!

Freezer Cooking: Taco Soup
One of the things that is way too easy to spend money on for me is eating out. When we first started reviewing our spending I was totally shocked and disgusted to see how much money went down the tube on eating out. One of the reasons why we ate out all the time was because of convenience. At the end of a long and stressful day when it came time to think about dinner it was just way to easy to say, "tonight we are going out to eat, we deserve it" and feel the stress drift right off of my shoulders.
One of the best ways I have found to prevent me from unnecessary spending in the form of fast food is to have a few yummy meals ready to go, aka: in the freezer.
Taco soup is one of those household recipes. What I mean by that is, every household has their own way of making taco soup. I am obsessed with mine. It is so delicious, so easy, so cheap, so fast, freezes so well, and *bonus* it's healthy. Need I say more? I think not.

Ten Dollar Dates: Dinner and a Movie!
Dinner and a movie, the classic date template.
My husband and I love going to the movies. When there are a lot of good ones out, we'll go three times a week if we can. It can get really expensive though, so we decided when we were still dating that we weren't going to go to first-run movies. This way, we don't have to choose which movies we can see and which we can't, we just go to the theater as liberally as we like. The price difference is amazing if you think about it. Since our dollar theater is technically $1.25 per ticket, it costs us $2.50 to see a movie there. Average ticket price for the regular theaters cost $8.00. So if we went to see a movie there we'd pay $16.00? For us this is the easiest choice. Waiting is not hard, because we are on a lag but we are constantly seeing the exact same movies as everyone else, just a few months later.
So, you can see a movie for $2.50, but what about dinner? Even when we order from the dollar menu at Wendy's we spend more than $10 (if husband is to be fully satisfied.) But, if you live in Utah county, look no further than BYU's Creamery on Ninth. If you don't, I have noticed most places have a super great cheap place to eat. You just have to find it! The creamery has a kid's meal that comes with an old-fashioned burger, a heaping pile of fresh fries, a drink (free re-fills) and a kid's size cup of their fabulous ice cream. It is our favorite place to go, and the best part is that each meal costs $3.80. I can never finish the meal, and husband is fully satisfied after eating it (it really isn't kid's sized.) This, paired with the dollar movies, you will have spent just $10 for a lovely night on the town.
If you don't live near enough to the creamery, no worries. Try out different options around your town. I'm sure there are some delicious and inexpensive options if you are willing to go find them! When you do, or if you have another Ten Dollar Date idea let us know. We'd love to feature you on our Ten Dollar Dates series!
"Thanks! I got it from D.I."
Sometimes you just get lucky at the thrift store. This particular day, I found this striped shirt in the maternity section of all places! I had been looking for one like it for a long time. I just did a quick little take-in on it and voila, I had a new favorite shirt.
I also found three new purses that day, and an awesome chair. I tried to take pictures of the other two but they were too shiny, and I am still working on learning how to take better pictures. But the one pictured above is my favorite. Total cost of my new outfit? $5.00
