Bountiful Basket, My Co-Op Experience

Have you guys heard of co-ops? If you haven't, it is basically a group of people pooling their money in order to buy cheap, fresh produce strait from the suppliers.

I have always wanted to try one but I was always nervous for some reason. I think I was unsure how good of a deal it would be and I didn't love the idea of not knowing what I would be getting. Also, I was worried about wasting food because there are only really two of us who eat real food.

Well, I finally got brave and tried one and I loved it! When I went to pick it up it felt so exciting. It was kinda fun not knowing what I was getting, haha.

Here's how it works:

1. Look up a co-op in your area
2. The Monday or Tuesday before you place an order and pay online.
3. At your pick up time (usually Friday or Saturday morning) you go to your site and check in. They had me sign by my name so they knew I had picked up my basket. Whatever the number is by your name that will be the number on your baskets. I was number 76. I have no idea how I still remember that. Then you load all the stuff in your baskets (1 for fruit 1 for veggies) into bags, wipe down and return your baskets and go home and enjoy your spoils!

Mmmmmm.

Here is what I got for $16.50. ($15.00 for food $1.50 for credit card processing):

7 large bananas
8 oranges
9 gala apples
5 tomatoes
1 bunch kale
1 bunch romaine lettuce
1 head green cabbage
2 large English cucumbers
1 canning melon
1 bunch green onions
5 lbs Idaho potatoes
2 lbs fresh carrots

The best part is that all of this produce was A-M-A-ZING. Literally THE BEST ORANGES I have ever had. I am meaning to go to Walmart and see what I could get these things for there, but even if you could get them for the same prices (which I don't think you could) they would taste nothing like these fresh fruits and vegetables.

Overall, I was really pleased with my experience. It encouraged us to eat fresh fruits and vegetables with every meal so nothing went to waste. I planned my meals after I picked up my baskets and I really didn't have to buy much else between my pantry and all the yummy fresh food.  I am picking up again this week so I will let you know how it goes.

  1. Jess, that sounds AMAZING! Way to go local, and it sounds like a very good deal, too. Pray tell, what did you do with the kale and the melon?

  3. Tiff it really was awesome! You should see if there is one near you guys. The melon we just cut up like a watermelon and had it with some other fruit as a side to sandwiches one night. For the kale Bryce got on the food network and picked a recipe. This is the one he chose: http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/bobby-flay/sauteed-kale-recipe/index.html it actually turned out delicious!

I loved the produce you got in the regular basket, however beware of their extras! I ordered peaches and they were rock hard (and supposed to be the ones where the pits came easily out, not true!) they would start to go moldy before they were soft enough to enjoy. I had to toss most of them that I planned on canning! They have a promise that no matter how bad of produce they give you, you can't get any money back. Horrible!
